Matilde Mateo

Matilde Mateo specializes in the art of the Middle Ages, with secondary interests in Classical art and romantic aesthetics. Her research focuses on how medieval art was conceptualized and perceived after the Middle Ages, and her current projects are devoted to the ideological manipulation of Spanish medieval art as a weapon in the shaping of a national identity. Prof. Mateo was born in Spain, where she lived, got her Ph.D. in Medieval Art (University of Santiago de Compostela, 1994), and worked as a professor (University of Vigo), until she moved to the U.S. in 1997. She has also spent a few years in the U.K., carrying out research in several London institutions, and getting an M.A. degree from the University of Essex. She has been awarded prizes and honors for her graduate degrees. She is also the author of one book (El Portico de la Gloria en la Inglaterra Victoriana, Santiago, Spain, 1991), and several articles, published in Spain and the U.S. She had presented papers in national and international conferences, both in the U.S. and Europe, and has been the recipient of numerous research fellowships and awards to study in London, at Yale University, the University of Chicago, and Indiana University.
